Oculus Rift is a new Head Mounted Display(HMD)designed for virtual reality games. Last year, a special campaign generated more than $2.40 million for the project. The company has already completed the developer kit for the device and is almost ready to launch the consumer version by August 2013. They are also coming out with a list of games for the device.
The Oculus Rift developer kit is available at a price of $300 and it is expected to be shipped in August 2013. You can buy the HMD from the official website of the company at https://www.oculusvr.com.The virtual reality headset is termed as the next big thing in the world of gaming. It has been designed for completely immersing people in gaming and make them feel that they are actually in the game.
Features of Oculus Rift
Many of the features of the Oculus Rift development kit are interestingly kept back. However, certain specifications have been revealed by the company. It has a field of view (FOV)of over 90 degrees horizontally. This is over two times the field of view of other comparable devices on the market. It is expected to fill almost the entire FOV of the wearer. The real world is entirely blocked to create a powerful sense of immersion in the view.
The Oculus Rift has a 1280 x 800 resolution and aspects ration of 16:10. As it is split between both the eyes, the effective resolution is 640 x 800when viewed in stereoscopic3D. Despite the dimensions of the HMD, its view is taller. It has an aspect ration of 4:5. as the Rift doesn’t overlap 100%, the total resolution is more than 640 for the width.
Its resolution is lower than a few other heads mounted displays available on the market. However, the consumer version is expected to have a minimal resolution of 1920 x 1080. The Oculus Rift has lenses that warp the image making the pixels feel closer at the center and stretched at the edges. This would create pin-cushioned looks, but the software makes corrections using pixel shader.
The Oculus Rift developer version comes with HDMI and DVI input in the control box. There are 2 HDMI and 1 DVIcables, an adapter for DVI to HDMI.
Oculus Rift Revealing
So far the Oculus Rift has been revealed only in front of journalists, and a few games have also been optimized for the HMD. According to the company, Oculus VR, the headset goes over the head almost like ski goggles. The device obscures the entire-view except what is in front of the eyes. It is possible to wiggle and adjust the headset for finding the right focal point.
Another interesting thing about Oculus Rift is that anyone, even those without perfect vision, can make the most out of this HMD. It has been designed to work with any type of eyes. There are 3 groups of lenses in the developer kit. Two of the lenses can adjust for users with nearsightedness. It is also possible to wear one’s glasses under the headset. The company claims that the consumer version would have a software for adjusting for visual types using menus.
The company is working to optimize games already on the market to work on Oculus Rift, in addition to building new ones. When it comes to making virtual reality games, there are many limitations, and it cannot be done the same way as regular games are developed.
Effect on Game Development
Most of the video game developers are working hard to make their games compatible with the new HMD’s specs. A full official support in the beta version of Half-Life 2 has been launched on Oculus Rift. The valve is working to sort out some motion issues for optimization.
Krillbite Studio is also interested in Oculus Rift for launching their new horror RPG, Among the Sleep. Other popular games from the developer include Walking Dead and the Knights of the Old Republic. The developers say that they are testing the HMD’s vision to the limit. They are also trying to adjust its dimensions and expand the horizons. Ben Falcone, another developer, is also working on the Rift with his new game, The Forest. (3709)
